The new staircase
The footprint
The new staircase is a spiral continuing the existing staircase.
The footprint is designed on two ellipses connected together.
The landing at loft level is also following the same footprint.
Materials
The bannister (or balustrade) of the new stair is composed by a round handrail and metal spindles (the vertical elements). The spindles are not parallel to each other to create a more organic effect.
The steps are made of wood stained white to keep the grain and the texture of the wood.
Finishes
To blend the new staircase with the existing one, the idea is matching the colours.
The existing staircase should be stripped back to wood (removing paint and carpet), the exposed wood should be stained white (not painted, to keep the texture of the wood), except the handrail and the stringer to be painted black.
Also the landings' floor should be wood stained white to be consistent with the the two staircases.
